A Lab Technologist plays a vital role in modern healthcare by supporting physicians and medical teams in the accurate detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of diseases. Working within the Operations Department, the Lab Technologist is responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids using advanced laboratory instruments, computerized systems, and standardized protocols.
Role Summary
The Lab Technologist processes biomedical specimens, conducts clinical and technical laboratory tests, and ensures that all results are accurately analyzed, documented, and reported. This role requires strict adherence to occupational health and safety standards, infection prevention and control policies, and quality assurance procedures to maintain the highest level of patient care.
In addition to routine diagnostic work, the Lab Technologist may contribute to medical research and laboratory analyses that support continuous improvement in healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and analyze biomedical specimens and accurately enter results into laboratory information systems.
- Perform basic and advanced clinical laboratory tests, including chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological examinations.
- Conduct phlebotomy and specimen collection using approved techniques and protocols.
- Prepare specimens for diagnostic testing and ensure proper handling and storage.
- Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, and as required) and manage reagent preparation and replenishment.
- Conduct basic and advanced microscopy to identify abnormal cells and detect microorganisms.
- Analyze samples to determine concentrations of chemical compounds such as electrolytes, proteins, enzymes, blood glucose, and cholesterol.
- Perform blood grouping and blood cell count analyses to detect diseased or abnormal cells.
- Apply internal and external quality control (QC) procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Evaluate laboratory and QC results, identify discrepancies, and support corrective actions when needed.
- Report laboratory findings clearly and accurately to medical professionals using reports, charts, and graphs to support clinical decision-making.
- Ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety standards, infection prevention and control measures, and laboratory regulations.
- Participate actively in Quality Improvement Programs to enhance laboratory performance and patient outcomes.
- Supervise and guide laboratory technicians in testing procedures, result analysis, inventory management, and documentation.
- Support medical professionals in interpreting laboratory results and ensuring timely, patient-focused care.
- Train, educate, and mentor new Lab Technologists and trainees on laboratory procedures and best practices.
- Adhere to all quality assurance policies and procedures in line with Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) standards.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Technology.
- Valid DHP (Department of Healthcare Professions) license.
- CPR course certification.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
