Job Purpose

The Clinical Coding Officer is responsible for accurately translating clinical diagnoses, procedures, and healthcare services documented in patient medical records into standardized medical codes. This role ensures compliance with approved coding standards and supports data accuracy, quality reporting, clinical audits, and healthcare analytics within Primary Health Care facilities.


Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze patient medical records in Primary Health Care centers.
  • Assign accurate clinical codes for diagnoses and procedures in accordance with approved coding systems (ICD-10-AM / ICD-10-CM / CPT).
  • Ensure completeness, clarity, and accuracy of clinical documentation prior to coding.
  • Liaise with physicians and healthcare professionals to clarify or obtain missing clinical information when required.
  • Maintain compliance with national healthcare regulations, coding guidelines, and quality standards.
  • Support clinical data quality initiatives, statistical reporting, and healthcare performance indicators.
  • Participate in internal and external clinical coding audits.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with healthcare privacy regulations.
  • Stay up to date with updates, revisions, and best practices in clinical coding standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:
    • Health Information Management
    • Clinical Coding
    • Nursing
    • Health Sciences
    • Medicine or a related healthcare discipline

Professional Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Clinical Coding qualification
  • ICD-10 Certification
  • Health Information Management or Medical Coding certifications

Required Experience

  • 1–3 years of experience in clinical coding, preferably within Primary Health Care settings.
  • Hands-on experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR) systems.
  • Strong understanding of clinical documentation standards and healthcare workflows.
